Although the genre of handbooks for confessors originated in the sixth century, it is only in this period that a substantial number of penitentials were compiled in this region. Some of these texts have been published in antiquated, nineteenth-century editions, while others have never appeared in print. This volume attempts to do justice to this penitential literature by providing a new edition of the penitentials compiled in this period. The Italian texts edited in this volume are the Paenitentiale Casinense (ms. Montecassino, Archivio dell?Abbazia, 372), the Paenitentiale Vaticanum (ms. Vatican, Archivio di San Pietro, H. 58), the Paenitentiale Vallicellianum E. 62 (ms. Rome, Biblioteca Vallicelliana, E. 62), the Paenitentiale Vallicellianum C. 6 (ms. Vallicelliana, C. 6), and the Paenitentiale Lucense (ms. Lucca, Biblioteca Statale, 1781). These texts, which are closely related, constitute an important source for the religious, social and intellectual history of this region. This volume also contains the first edition of the Frankish Paenitentiale in II libris, which was an important source for the Italian penitentials of this period. | Aggiungi al Carrello |

Die Mehrzahl der Bußbücher ist zwar im
19. Jahrhundert durch die Publikationen von Migne,
Wasserschleben und Schmitz bekannt gemacht worden, aber ihre
Editionen sind unzuverlässig, insbesondere weil die
handschriftliche Überlieferung unzureichend bekannt war und
nicht alle bekannten Handschriften kollationiert worden sind. Die
Editionen werden überdies dem besonderen Charakter der
Bußbücher als Gebrauchstexten nicht gerecht. Sie
berücksichtigen nämlich nicht dass der Text so, wie er
uns in einer Handschrift heute vorliegt, für die Praxis an
einem Ort bestimmt war, dass jeder Textzeuge also einen Sitz
im Leben gehabt hat. Unterschiedliche Bußmaße in
verschiedenen Handschrifte, etwa IV oder VI Jahre, können
z. B. auf die Unachtsamkeit eines Schreibers zurückgehen,
sie können auch Ausdruck eines räumlich oder zeitlich
bedingten Wandels in der Beurteilung einer Schuld sein. In jedem
Fall sind die Angaben der jeweiligen Handschrift für ihre
Benutzer maßgebend gewesen und haben evtl. weiteren
Abschriften als Vorlage gedient. Aufgabe einer kritischen Edition
der Bußbücher kann daher nicht die Präsentation
eines auf Grund der Handschriftenkollation rekonstruierten
Archetyps sein, der dem Originaltext möglichst nahekommt,
demgegenüber Abweichungen (Varianten) in den Handschriften als
Fehler gewertet und lediglich im textkritischen Apparat genannt
werden. Die Edition der Bußbücher verlangt viel mehr,
dass jede handschriftliche Überlieferung eines Textes als
gründsätzlich gleichwertig gilt, weil jede Zeugnis des
Ortes oder Raumes ihrer Niederschrift oder ihres
Überlieferungszusammenhanges ist. Abgesehen von eindeutigen
Schreibfehlern, die oft auch das Verständnis erschweren,
müssen die Texte deshalb möglichst als solche zur Geltung
kommen. Demgemäß ist für die Neuedition der
Bußbücher dann, wenn ein Text in mehreren Handschriften
erhalten ist, eine von diesen als Leithandschrift gewählt.
