Together Ademar?s writings bear witness to his enormous productivity and to his many talents as a historian, preacher, musical composer, liturgist, teacher and artist. His notebooks in particular, assembled in manuscript VLO 15 at the University Library of Leiden, shed a unique - and neglected - light on Ademar?s capacities as a teacher. An analysis of the texts in VLO 15 shows that Ademar was interested in an extended curriculum (including medicine and Arabic astrology) and that he used a variety of techniques and methods to instruct his pupils.In this study extensive attention is paid to a critical, palaeographical and codicological investigation of the extant manuscript evidence, including some newly discovered material. Ademar?s versatile writing habits, his way of preparing his parchment and the flexible way in which he constructed and used his quires are discussed, with detailed descriptions of palaeographical samples and numerous colour plates. These will enable the reader to follow the investigations into past ascriptions of manuscripts to Ademar.The evidence here presented offers a more positive and nuanced view of Ademar, who in recent years has been portrayed as a solitary forger leading a marginal life at Saint-Cybard, his place of exile, on account of his attempts to promote his patron saint St Martial to a position as one of Christ?s disciples. Allegedly, the ensuing conflict led to his decision to depart for the Holy Land, never to return. These graphic signs inserted in manuscript margins provided manuscript text with layers of additional meaning and functionality. From the most common signs marking biblical quotations and passages of interest to the sophisticated systems of signs used by some of the early medieval scholars, annotation symbols represent perhaps the most common form of marginalia encountered in early medieval books. Yet, their non-verbal character proved a serious obstacle to their understanding and appreciation.This book represents the first systematic study of annotation symbols used in the Latin West between c. 400 and c. 900. Combining paleographic evidence with the evidence of written sources such as late antique and early medieval lists of signs, this book identifies the most important communities of sign users and conventions in use in the early Middle Ages. The contributions scrutinise, on the one side, text corpora and textual traditions that had a seminal impact on late medieval European culture: the texts of Geoffrey Chaucer and Reginald Pecock, the manuscripts of Dante?s?Commedia, late medieval Italian and Latin poetic anthologies, but also miscellanies from the Council of Basel and multitextual manuscripts containing anti-Hussite texts. Psychomachia and the bestiary known as the Physiologus, to which tenth- and eleventh-century readers added a dozen short school texts. Largely for its illustrations, the manuscript has been considered a monument of Ottonian illumination and one of the principal treasures of the Royal Library in Brussels. The allure of its illustrated texts resulted in inadequate attention to the minor additions to the volume. This study reveals that these have a coherent origin (in Liège) and purpose (the study and teaching of allegory); and that they provide detailed evidence for teaching in the Liège schools of the period. Among the additions are philosophical, mathematical, prosodiacal, and lexical works. These can be specifically related to the studies of Liège writers of the tenth and eleventh centuries, and evidence is presented showing that some of these writers demonstrably used this very manuscript. A Latin glossary is among the most interesting additions, as it preserves a record of a local Latin vocabulary used by Liège writers of the period. The monograph concludes with a survey of tenth- and eleventh-century writers from Liège, and what ancient texts they knew. A comparison of their common reading culture, supplemented by evidence from surviving manuscripts and from medieval booklists, allows a fuller picture of the texts that were known and taught in the Liège schools at the time, and provides a new basis for assessing the teaching in these schools. | Aggiungi al Carrello |

Much of the attention is on Portuguese, Estonian and Slovenian library and archive material ? that is, on material that has rarely been the centre of attention. The volume opens with two contributions on bookbinding databases by Athanasios Velios and Sonja Svolj?ak and others. These offer deliberations on the effective selection and coding of descriptive elements, while also expressing the need for the adoption of a rigorous and shared terminology to enhance compatibility among databases. Anja Dular discusses the historical aspects of life and labour conditions, along with the financial and legal frameworks in Carniola in the early post-medieval period. Georgios Boudalis, meanwhile, puts under scrutiny the established opinion of the "Coptic" origin of Early Christian bindings, while also drawing attention to the documentary expressiveness of images of books in early medieval paintings. Ines Correia presents results of first-hand extensive research on 15 illuminated manuscripts from the Portuguese monastery of Lorvão, analysing the various layers and the sequence of restorative procedures. Rita Castro and others discuss the results of fundamental investigation into re-bound Romanesque manuscripts from the monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra. Carlo Federici and Melania Zanetti contribute an exhaustive study on the bindings of books printed by Aldo Manutius (1494 to 1515). Their study deals with the question of whether this Venetian printer had his own preferred bookbinder, to which the answer is negative. Basing her observations on the reuse of fragments, Nata?a Golob dedicates her article to matters surrounding the recognition of characteristics of individual bookbinders and their works. Gerth Kulemann, a bookbinder from Tallinn (prior to 1550), comes under the examination of Liia Rebane. Of interest in his works, which document the transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance, is the iconographically distinctive decoration. Bindings of Books of Hours from Portuguese collections, their problematic structural elements, and the iconography of their decorations, which express the connection to seamanship, are the topics of Rita Araújo?s contribution. The volume is brought to a close with two studies, each providing a detailed description of research and restoration efforts: Jedert Vodopivec Toma?i? analyses the variance of bindings in Johann Weichard Valvasor?s Die Ehre dess Hertzogthums Crain (1689), made at the time as it was published.
